Chapter 81
Vincent Langley narrowed his eyes, a cold smirk playing on his lips.
"In the Nine-City Alliance, our Langley family holds power in Vienna. Alexander Durand came from the Durand family of Lyon, where he was the third son."
"The entire Durand family was wiped out four years ago. The killers were never caught. Alexander was supposed to inherit the family legacy."
His fingers tapped rhythmically against the desk, producing dull thuds.
"What surprises me most is that Evelyn Roland knew him."
Vincent couldn't fathom the connection.
After thorough investigation, he discovered Alexander had met Isabella during his training years. They'd lived together briefly in the countryside.
Few knew about this chapter of their lives. Even his informants found scant details.
"That girl has uncanny luck."
First Alexander Durand, now Sebastian Cortez.
Such connections made Vincent's palms itch with envy.
Sebastian Cortez had rejected his partnership offers multiple times. Yet Evelyn effortlessly gained his favor.
"We can't afford to antagonize her yet."
A calculating gleam flashed in Vincent's eyes.
"She'll be a valuable chess piece in due time."
Turning to his wife and daughter, his voice turned stern.
"Be civil to Evelyn from now on. Sebastian entrusted her with the auction house. That speaks volumes."
Isabella curled her lip in disdain.
"She's just trading on her looks. Men fawn over her without her lifting a finger."
Her nails dug crescent moons into her palms.
Evelyn's beauty and talent alike fueled her bitter jealousy.
"Isabella!" Vincent's expression darkened. "I'm campaigning for office this year. No missteps."
Isabella instantly donned an obedient mask.
"Father, you'll win for sure. Then our family will finally get the respect we deserve."
Ambition glittered in her eyes.
"Once you're elected, that old hag Beatrice Valentine won't dare look down on me!"
The thought of the matriarch exiled to the Courtyard Villa filled her with vicious satisfaction.
Vincent studied his daughter with mingled pride and concern.
"Don't waste energy on the nearly departed. Focus on your acting. Become a star, and the world is yours."
Isabella lifted her chin with confidence.
"Don't worry, Father. Didn't I snatch Scarlett Orlando's role?"
Her laugh held cruel amusement.
"Even an award-winning actress has to step aside without connections."
