Chapter 28

Evelyn Roland frowned as another piercing scream echoed through the hallway.

She rose swiftly and followed the sound.

At the end of the corridor, a frail girl was violently shoved to the ground by a man in a tailored suit.

Evelyn discreetly pulled out her phone to record the scene.

"Natalie Lowell, don't forget you're just a worthless asthmatic. You should be grateful I married you at all!" The man's handsome features twisted with cruelty beneath his polished exterior. "If you interfere with my affairs again, I'll end you."

The girl gazed up at him with despair. "Daniel Sherwood, is my presence really so shameful to you?"

He sneered. "What use are you except serving my parents at home? Miss Macmillian is different. Her family are rising stars in Vienna. She can elevate my status!"

Leaning down, he gripped her chin. "I've already won Miss Macmillian's heart. Soon she'll be carrying my child. And you? You can't even produce an egg!"

"Ah!" The girl cried out as he kicked her viciously.

"Cough... cough..." Natalie suddenly struggled for breath, her face turning ashen. "Daniel... help me..."

"Stop faking it." A bejeweled woman emerged, looking down her nose with contempt. "Blame your miserable fate. Dying here would solve everything."

Evelyn's pupils constricted.

This scene felt hauntingly familiar.

As she moved to intervene, Isabella Langley approached in stiletto heels.

"Get off!" Isabella kicked away Natalie's grasping hand from her designer dress. "Disgusting trash!"

Evelyn's eyes turned icy.

Once Isabella departed, she immediately approached, slipping a pill into the girl's mouth.

"Only you can save yourself." Evelyn helped her up. "Come find me in six months. I can cure your asthma completely—let you conceive and bear children like any healthy woman."

A glimmer of hope flickered in Natalie's dull eyes. "Really?"

"Provided you survive until then." Evelyn's tone remained neutral.

The girl gave a bitter smile. "You saw... everything just now?"
