Chapter 348
"Nanyang! Who authorized you to use coercive tactics?" Captain Song shoved open the interrogation room door and switched off the blinding spotlight.
Evelyn's vision swam with dark spots.
Nanyang's brow furrowed. The captain's sudden appearance had caught him off guard.
"Sir, Evelyn refuses to confess. The public pressure is overwhelming. I just wanted to close the case quickly. These pills are irrefutable evidence."
He brandished the so-called proof before the captain could speak.
"Irrefutable?" Captain Song sneered. "Where's the lab report? The fingerprint analysis? Witness statements? You call a bottle of pills irrefutable?"
He pointed to the adjacent room. "The real evidence is next door. We've arrested six men who swapped the medication. Evelyn gave Julian Roscente medicine for his eye condition."
"She's innocent."
Though Evelyn had anticipated this outcome, her chest still tightened.
The mastermind remained at large.
Nanyang's pupils contracted. He lowered his head. "Ms. Roland, my apologies."
Evelyn rose, meeting his gaze with a faint smile. "No need. My attorney will be in touch."
She turned to Captain Song. His face was unfamiliar, but gratitude warmed her voice.
"Thank you."
Nathaniel Song studied her for a long moment. "Don't mention it. You're free to go."
Evelyn blinked until her vision cleared, then exited the interrogation room.
Nanyang clenched his fists, speechless.
Captain Song's voice turned glacial. "Three-thousand-word disciplinary report. Expect a court summons."
He strode out without another word.
Nanyang kicked the table, then grimaced at the pain.
Where had he gone wrong?
Nathaniel watched Evelyn get into Sebastian Orlando's car before dialing Adrian Valentine.
Adrian waited alone in his vehicle. Isabella had been dismissed hours earlier.
"Status?" he answered immediately.
Nathaniel: "You were right. Vincent Langley has a mole in the precinct—Nanyang. He subjected Evelyn to light torture."
"Fortunately, I intervened in time. Her eyes should be fine."
Adrian's gaze followed Evelyn's departing car through the window. His eyes turned razor-sharp.
"Thanks." The words came out rough.
Nathaniel said, "My father never stopped investigating your father's case. I'll keep close tabs on Nanyang."
Adrian: "Good."
"Julian Roscente woke up," Nathaniel continued. "He installed surveillance in his hospital room and caught the medication swap on camera. Faked poisoning this morning to lure them out. That assassin from your video was among them."
Adrian's jaw tightened. So Julian had been playing the long game.
"Nathaniel, clear Evelyn's name publicly."
Nathaniel chuckled. "You're invested? She remained remarkably composed throughout."
"She always does." Adrian ended the call.
Outside the precinct, reporters swarmed Nathaniel.
"Captain Song! Is Evelyn Roland innocent?"
Nathaniel straightened his tie. "The real perpetrators are in custody. An official statement will be released."
A female journalist pressed, "Is the evidence conclusive? Can you completely exonerate her?"
