Chapter 281
Julian Roscente leaned back in the car seat, his fingers tapping lightly on the armrest. He pondered how to make Evelyn Roland see him in a new light.
Through the window, his gaze followed her slender figure. There was an undeniable sharpness in Evelyn's every movement—a stark contrast to Isabella Langley's affected mannerisms.
"Mr. Roscente, we've got a tail," his assistant suddenly warned.
Julian's expression darkened. Evelyn had just cautioned him to be careful. Had the threat arrived so soon?
He turned to look. The black sedan behind them abruptly accelerated.
"Watch out!" Julian barked.
CRASH!
The deafening impact shattered the night. Their car was violently rammed into the guardrail.
Evelyn's pupils contracted. The assailants had struck faster than she anticipated.
Julian's world spun. The brutal collision left his vision swimming.
Instinctively shielding his head, he managed a bitter smile. Was this how he would die today?
The car flipped multiple times before finally coming to a stop.
Not far away, a man wielding an axe emerged from the black sedan.
Evelyn narrowed her eyes. The attacker raised the axe and swung it at the car window without hesitation.
BANG! BANG!
The glass shattered instantly.
The axe lifted again, poised to strike Julian's skull.
At the last possible second, Evelyn slammed her foot on the accelerator.
The man sensed danger and hesitated for a split second.
That was all the time she needed.
A gun appeared in Evelyn's hand.
BANG!
The bullet struck the man's wrist with deadly precision. The axe clattered to the ground.
The assailant quickly retrieved his weapon and fled back to his car.
With a roar of the engine, the black sedan vanished into the night.
But the danger wasn't over.
A lighter was tossed onto the pavement.
WHOOSH!
Flames erupted skyward.
Evelyn leaped from her car and sprinted toward Julian.
Through his fading consciousness, Julian glimpsed her agile silhouette against the inferno. She knew how to shoot?
"Julian!" Evelyn pounded on the shattered window.
"E...Evelyn..." His bloodied lips curved weakly. Of all people, she was the one who came back for him.
"Get out! The car's going to blow!"
Julian shook his head. "Run... Save yourself..."
Evelyn yanked at the mangled door with all her strength.
Nearby, his assistant Lucas kicked open his door but couldn't move. "Mr. Roscente! My leg's trapped!"
The fire grew fiercer by the second.
Evelyn whirled around and dashed back to her car. She grabbed a jack and a steel rod before charging back into the flames.
