Evelyn arched an eyebrow at Mrs. Roscente. "Why would I kill your son? What reason could I possibly have?"

Her tone was eerily calm.

The question caught Mrs. Roscente off guard. The image of her son lying in the hospital bed flashed through her mind. Suddenly, she lost control and raised her hand.

The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the hallway.

Evelyn turned her face slightly, her cheek burning. This was only the third time she'd ever been struck—the first two had come from Adrian.

She slowly lifted her gaze, a cold glint flickering in her eyes.

"You vile woman! My son fell ill after taking your medicine. How could you be so heartless?" Mrs. Roscente shrieked, tears streaming down her face. "He's my only son!"

Evelyn pressed her tongue against the numb spot on her cheek.

Mrs. Roscente raised her hand again.

Sebastian Orlando swiftly caught her wrist. "Mrs. Roscente, the police will investigate this thoroughly. We're heading to the station now."

The woman collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

First, her husband's illegitimate child had been exposed. Now, her son was in critical condition. She was completely shattered.

"Evelyn, what did my son ever do to you?" She clutched desperately at Evelyn's sleeve.

Evelyn looked down at her. "If I were truly responsible, I wouldn't be standing here right now."

Evelyn met the woman's hostile gaze. "I have the right not to answer."

"Is refusing to answer a crime?" Evelyn smiled faintly.
