Chapter 473

Katherine was utterly terrified. There was no escape for her now.

"Are you certain?" Evelyn asked, her voice cool and measured.

Katherine's face brightened at the slight softening in Evelyn's tone. She answered quickly, "Absolutely! I'll do anything—just give me one more chance."

Evelyn considered it for a moment. "You won't regret this?"

"No, I won't."

"Let me think about it."

Relief flooded Katherine like a tidal wave. "Thank you, Ms. Carter! Thank you!"

The moment Evelyn left, Katherine collapsed onto the floor, her back slick with sweat. She smacked her forehead in frustration.

Why had she ever signed with Kingsley Industries? At least she still had a shot. If Evelyn kept feeding her resources, she could scrape together enough to buy out her contract and escape this nightmare.

Once she was free, she'd make Evelyn pay.

But while Katherine was busy dreaming of revenge, Evelyn had already anticipated her next move. The next day, Katherine was assigned her new role.

She exploded the second she saw it.

"What? You're making me a receptionist?"

Maxwell Donovan held out the uniform with a polite smile. "Direct orders from Ms. Carter."

"I'm a star! I bring in millions for this company! What kind of joke is this? Who would even take this job? No way. I'm talking to Evelyn about this."

Maxwell adjusted his glasses. "Ms. Carter has a packed schedule. I doubt she'll have time for you, Ms. Whitaker."

He continued smoothly, "The receptionist position pays six thousand a month. It's not celebrity money, but it covers basic expenses."

"Six thousand? Are you serious?" Katherine scoffed. "I used to make millions a month! That wouldn't even cover my lunch!"

Maxwell's smile didn't waver. "If this isn't to your liking, we can transfer you to another position. The cleaning department has an opening, but the pay is even lower. Would you prefer that?"

Katherine nearly lost it.

"Get Evelyn here right now! I want to talk to her face-to-face. She's trying to humiliate me! I won't stand for this!"

Her voice echoed through the office, drawing curious stares and hushed whispers.

The attention only fueled her rage.

"What are you all looking at? Get lost! I quit! I'm done with this!"

Just then, Evelyn happened to walk by. The crowd scattered instantly.

Katherine spotted her and called out, "Ms. Carter! I refuse to be a receptionist—or a cleaner!"

Evelyn didn't even glance her way as she stepped into the elevator.

Maxwell adjusted his tie. "Ms. Whitaker, just do your job. Maybe if you behave, Ms. Carter will reconsider."

His tone turned sharper. "But if you keep causing scenes, she might just cut you off for good."
