Chapter 289

Vivienne stayed quiet, but her mind raced with questions about Harrison and Evelyn's relationship.

A sharp rap sounded against the car window.

Evelyn glanced up to find Harrison standing outside the vehicle. He'd materialized like a phantom from thin air.

Her fingers flew across the phone screen, locked in an intense mobile game battle.

Deliberately ignoring him, she focused on the game. Her thumbs moved with practiced precision, delivering the final blow to her opponent.

When "VICTORY" flashed across her screen, she finally set the phone down and opened the car door.

"Harrison."

Her pressed lips betrayed her irritation.

His expression softened instantly. "What's wrong? Why are you gaming in the car?"

Evelyn shrugged. "What do you think? Someone decided I wasn't worthy of attending the meeting."

Harrison's face darkened like a thundercloud.

"If that's how they treat our people, we're done here." He slid into the car and ordered the driver to leave.

As the car pulled away, Evelyn watched the cityscape blur past the window. A warm feeling spread through her chest - it felt good to have someone in her corner.

"Harrison, that deal was worth millions. You're really walking away just like that?"

He reached over and tousled her hair. "No contract is worth your dignity."

Evelyn's heart fluttered at his words.

"You're making me blush. Though I feel bad for Adrian - he worked so hard to set this up."

A flicker of jealousy crossed Harrison's features before he schooled his expression.

"I can negotiate deals too. A few million is nothing. I'll pay whatever they ask. But don't mention other men around me again."

Evelyn blinked, surprised by his possessiveness.

"Since when did you become so territorial?"

Harrison didn't hesitate. "Every man becomes territorial when it comes to the woman he loves."

Evelyn's pulse skyrocketed. Heat flooded her cheeks.

The woman he loved?

His words cast some kind of spell over her.

"What nonsense are you spouting?" she protested, turning away to hide the smile tugging at her lips.

The moment shattered when Harrison's phone rang.

"Mr. Whitmore, where did you go?" Maxwell's voice came through the speaker.

"Cancel the Sterling Enterprises partnership," Harrison stated flatly.

Maxwell hesitated. "Sir, may I ask why-"

Harrison ended the call without explanation.

Donovan approached cautiously. "Mr. Donovan, what's happening? Where did Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Carter go? Is the meeting still on?"

Maxwell offered a knowing smile. "Mr. Whitmore said someone offended Ms. Carter. When she's unhappy, he's unhappy. And when he's unhappy, deals get canceled."

Leaving Donovan gaping, Maxwell led his team out.

Donovan staggered back, nearly collapsing before his secretary caught him.
