Chapter 352

Evelyn let out a quiet hum, an unexpected calm washing over her in that instant.

Within moments, she spotted Harrison approaching with long, purposeful strides.

As he drew nearer, she could see the faint sheen of perspiration on his brow. "Harrison, did I interrupt something important?"

When he noticed the space she'd put between them, he reached for her hand and guided her toward the corporate building.

"Evie, since when do you stand on ceremony with me? You can come find me anytime. It's never an inconvenience."

A smile tugged at Evelyn's lips. The warmth of his palm felt authentic, reassuring in its sincerity.

They crossed the bustling first-floor lobby together, drawing curious glances from employees. Though aware of the attention, Evelyn felt no embarrassment—only an odd sense of security.

Inside the elevator, she explained, "Beatrice mentioned it's your birthday today, so I thought I'd—"

Harrison turned sharply. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming?"

Tell him in advance? So she wouldn't have witnessed whatever was happening in his office?

Evelyn's mood instantly darkened. Harrison immediately picked up on the shift. "What's wrong?"

She shook her head. "Nothing."

Turning away, she couldn't stop herself from asking, "Harrison, what exactly is your relationship with your former assistant?"

"Former assistant?" His brow furrowed. "You mean Diana?"

Evelyn gave a tight nod.

"Professionally, I'm her employer, she's my employee," Harrison stated matter-of-factly.

Evelyn murmured an acknowledgment, her expression clearly skeptical.

Harrison grew more intrigued. "Why the sudden interest?"

As the elevator doors parted, Evelyn took in the busy office scene without comment, stepping out first.

Confused, Harrison quickly followed.

"Ms. Carter, Mr. Whitmore."

Under the watchful eyes of staff, they entered the CEO's office in succession, the door clicking shut behind them.

"Evie, what's going on?"

His question hung in the air as his gaze landed on the cake atop his desk. Remembering her words in the elevator, a spark of delight lit his eyes. He moved toward it instinctively.

Evelyn blocked his path. "Wait."

She stood before him, lower lip jutting in a pout that made her look endearingly petulant.

Harrison's lips curved as he studied her. "Evie, did you bring this?"

She neither confirmed nor denied.

But the answer was written across her face. A realization struck him. "You came by earlier, didn't you?"

Evelyn huffed. "Yes. And I saw something I shouldn't have."

Catching the implication, Harrison's eyes narrowed.

He closed the distance until mere inches separated them, their breaths mingling. "What exactly did you see?"

"I—"

The words stuck in her throat. Finally, she pointed to the adjacent lounge. "Why was there a woman in your private quarters?"

"A woman?" Harrison's voice dropped. "You saw a woman in my bed?"

Evelyn's jaw set stubbornly. Understanding dawned on Harrison's face. "Was it Diana?"
