Chapter 458
"Evelyn, you must be exhausted from work lately," Margaret said softly.
Evelyn gave a gentle smile. "It's manageable. Kingsley Industries is finally stabilizing."
"Good. That's wonderful news," Margaret replied before breaking into a series of coughs that made Evelyn's brow furrow with concern.
"Grandma, are you feeling alright?"
"Just my usual ailments, dear. Nothing to fuss over."
Evelyn's heart clenched. During her three years with the Sterling family, Margaret had been her sole source of warmth and comfort in that cold mansion.
"Have you seen Dr. Whitmore about this?"
"Yes, yes. Don't trouble yourself over an old woman. I simply called because I've missed our chats."
"I'll come visit after work today."
Margaret's voice brightened instantly. "Truly? Oh, that would make my week! This empty house feels so lifeless these days. Your visits are the highlight of my days."
"Grandma, you know you're family to me."
Tears welled in Margaret's eyes at the words. "You've always had such a kind heart, Evelyn! Now, I won't keep you from your work. I'll see you this evening."
As Evelyn set down her phone, a crisp knock sounded at her office door. Maxwell entered with professional efficiency.
"Ms. Carter, Mr. Thornton from Horizon Technologies has arrived."
Evelyn nodded. "Please escort him to Conference Room B. I'll be there shortly."
"Of course."
Gathering the necessary documents, Evelyn smoothed her blazer and headed out.
The negotiation with Matthias proceeded remarkably well, culminating in both companies signing a partnership agreement by afternoon.
Matthias examined the contract with satisfaction.
"Ms. Carter," he said, extending his hand, "I look forward to our collaboration."
"The feeling is mutual, Mr. Thornton. I'm eager to learn from your expertise."
"Now you're being modest," Matthias chuckled. "With your reputation in the tech industry, this will be a partnership of equals."
"You flatter me, Mr. Thornton. Your experience is what we value most," Evelyn replied with genuine humility that earned Matthias's respect.
"Shall we?"
"After you."
Their pleasant exchange continued as the group exited, creating an atmosphere of professional harmony.
From his vantage point, Julian Hawthorne watched with a deepening scowl.
His assistant murmured, "Mr. Hawthorne, Ms. Carter's deal with Horizon appears finalized. They've signed contracts already."
Julian's lips curled in disdain. "Hmph. Youthful recklessness. What substantial results can she possibly achieve?"
His gaze hardened with contempt. "Let the girl play at business. Every fledgling needs to fall before they learn to fly properly."
"What's our next move, sir?"
Julian's expression turned calculating. "She thinks the digital economy is her golden ticket, but she's forgotten that virtual platforms can't compete with tangible assets. This time, not even divine intervention can save her ambitions."
Suddenly remembering something crucial, Julian turned sharply. "Did you discover who purchased the Eastwood property?"
