Chapter 27
"Evelyn is returning to Sterling City?" Nathan's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Since she's going back, should we discuss the arranged marriage between our families?"
Dominic remained composed, unlike Nathan's visible enthusiasm. "That depends entirely on them. It's their marriage, after all."
Nathan understood the unspoken message.
He knew his son too well. Having lost his wife early, he'd spoiled Adrian rotten.
Though Adrian managed Prescott Corporation competently, his personal life was scandalous. From wild parties to endless flings, he'd done it all.
Far from the ideal match for the Kingsley heiress.
Evelyn was the cherished only daughter of the Kingsley family. Her overprotective brothers would never allow her to marry someone like Adrian.
Nathan remembered Evelyn - beautiful, intelligent, kind. The perfect daughter-in-law.
He'd have to send Adrian to Sterling City immediately. This might be his last chance to secure the match.
Excusing himself hastily, Nathan rushed home to deliver the news. Dominic saw him out politely.
Returning to the living room, Dominic found Evelyn emerging from the study.
"Dominic, you're sending me to Sterling City?"
His expression turned serious. "Yes. You know the city best. You'll oversee our expansion strategy there. But the choice is yours."
Determination flashed in Evelyn's eyes. "I'll go."
"Remember," Dominic cautioned, "you'll represent Kingsley Industries in Sterling City."
"The company comes first. Personal feelings can't influence business decisions."
Nathan's recent defeat in Darai would have repercussions. Kingsley's Sterling branches would face the backlash first.
He wouldn't force her if she refused.
Evelyn understood perfectly. The company's future hung in the balance.
"Don't worry, Dominic. I know this is my chance to prove myself."
"Many questioned my sudden promotion. Handling smaller branches first will silence the doubters before I return to headquarters."
Dominic nodded approvingly. "Good. You've grasped the situation perfectly."
"But..." Evelyn's expression turned playful.
"But what?"
"If I'm in Sterling City, I won't see you every day!" She grinned mischievously.
Dominic's stern expression softened instantly. All traces of anger from Nathan's visit disappeared.
He ruffled her hair affectionately. "Always the charmer. I'll visit whenever possible."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Meanwhile at Sterling Manor, Nathan stormed in, ripping off his tie in frustration. Vanessa and Isabella trailed silently behind, not daring to speak.
In his study, Nathan poured a generous glass of whiskey, staring out the window darkly.
Without Kingsley's support, he'd overspent massively to secure the expo slot.
Total defeat in Darai.
And Evelyn had orchestrated it all.
His greatest supporter had become his fiercest opponent, standing firmly against him now.
She'd clearly severed all ties.
His grip tightened around the glass as emotions churned violently.
The phone rang abruptly. "Yes?" he growled.
"Mr. Sterling," Simon hesitated, "the lawyers just received divorce papers. Ms. Carter's attorney conveyed a message..."
His assistant's nervous pause signaled bad news.
"What did she say?" Nathan snapped.
"That her lawyer will handle all divorce proceedings henceforth. Since you refused mediation, she's proceeding with..."
Simon trailed off, bracing for the explosion.
The shattering of glass answered first. Even through the phone, Simon broke into a cold sweat.
Evelyn had truly pushed Nathan to the edge this time.
