Chapter 190
"Nathan!" Evelyn's voice cracked as she screamed his name.
No matter how desperately she called out, Nathan remained motionless on the pavement.
In the driver's seat of the speeding Mercedes, Cassandra Winslow froze in shock at the sudden turn of events.
She never expected someone would leap into danger to save Evelyn without hesitation.
But she couldn't stay here now.
Gritting her teeth, Cassandra jerked the steering wheel sharply, ignoring the crumpled front of her vehicle.
She sped away from the scene, tires screeching.
Evelyn forced herself to focus and dialed emergency services with trembling fingers. "911? There's been a car accident on Sterling Boulevard near—"
Her voice broke as she looked down at Nathan's unconscious form.
The paramedics arrived within minutes, rushing Nathan to the nearest trauma center.
In the sterile hospital corridor, Evelyn finally caught her breath and called Maxwell. "Max, there's been an accident."
Maxwell's voice turned urgent. "Are you hurt? Where are you? I'm coming now."
"No need—" Evelyn's gaze fixed on the operating room doors. The memory of the crash replayed in her mind.
That Mercedes had been aiming straight for her.
If Nathan hadn't appeared like lightning and taken the impact, she'd be the one on that operating table.
Evelyn's grip tightened around her phone. "It was a black Mercedes. Find out who owns it immediately. The driver fled—this wasn't an accident."
"Understood. I'm on it."
As she ended the call, Evelyn leaned against the cold hospital wall, her phone digging into her palm.
Within the hour, the Blackwell family stormed into the hospital. Eleanor Blackwell reached her first, fury radiating from every pore.
"You wretched girl!" Eleanor's shrill voice echoed down the corridor. "Did my son get hurt because of you?"
Even in his semi-conscious state, Nathan had been murmuring Evelyn's name.
His glazed eyes seemed to find her silhouette one last time before his hand went limp at his side, plunging him into unconsciousness.
