Chapter 390

"Callum, we've made headway with that investigation you requested."

A wicked grin spread across Callum's face. "Did you locate the officer in charge?"

"Affirmative. He's currently at the precinct. Shall I arrange a meeting?"

Callum glanced at Evelyn and Harrison, nodding decisively. "We're on our way."

Hanging up, he turned to them. "This visit will bring us closer to the truth."

Evelyn's fingers trembled unexpectedly. A sudden wave of unease washed over her, making her skin prickle with nervous energy.

The sensation lingered until their car pulled up at the police station, where she finally managed to steady her breathing.

Harrison noticed her tension and leaned closer. "Whatever we discover, we'll handle it together."

"Thank you," Evelyn murmured.

From the front seat, Callum smirked at Harrison's uncharacteristic gentleness. Who knew Evelyn could soften the formidable Harrison Whitmore?

"Do you think..." Evelyn hesitated, "this might lead to more questions than answers?"

Harrison squeezed her hand. "The truth often hides in plain sight. What we perceive as obstacles might be illusions."

Just then, the precinct doors swung open.

Chief Tobias Pembroke rushed forward upon recognizing Callum. "Mr. Blackwood! To what do we owe this honor?"

As the son of a prominent political figure, Callum commanded respect even from the highest city officials.

After exchanging pleasantries, Callum made introductions. "Harrison, Evelyn, meet Chief Pembroke."

The chief's demeanor shifted subtly when he noticed Callum's deference to Harrison. This was clearly someone of importance.

"Mr. Whitmore, what a pleasure. How may I assist you today?"

"We're here regarding a vehicular incident," Callum interjected. "I assume you're aware? We'd like to review the case files."

Chief Pembroke's expression turned apologetic. "I'm afraid case files aren't publicly accessible without proper authorization. However, the responding officer is available to speak with you."

Callum's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Chief Pembroke, surely there's flexibility in this matter?"

"Protocols must be followed, Mr. Blackwood. Unless..." The chief trailed off meaningfully.

"You're saying we need official clearance," Callum deduced.

The chief nodded. "My hands are tied otherwise."

Callum's jaw tightened. Normally, securing clearance would be trivial, but his recent falling-out with his father complicated matters.

The thought of swallowing his pride irritated him, yet he couldn't let Harrison and Evelyn down. The dilemma gnawed at him as they stood in the sterile police station lobby.
