Chapter 75
Quill Jagger lay on the cold altar, her gaze unfocused as she watched the man dancing wildly before her.
Seven days and seven nights.
She had witnessed this man battle death itself.
Blair Nash's bloodshot eyes were sunken deep into their sockets, yet his unshaven face glowed with triumph. He pranced around like a child, muttering words no one could understand.
Quill Jagger suddenly remembered the time she had a fever as a child. Her father had kept vigil by her bedside for three days and nights just like this.
"Hey! Say something!" Blair Nash waved a hand in front of her dazed eyes. "Am I amazing or what?"
A weak smile tugged at Quill Jagger's lips. "The great Physician Nash works miracles. Even the King of Hell would flee at the sight of you."
"That mouth of yours..." Blair Nash glared but couldn't suppress a chuckle.
He turned and called toward the cave entrance, "Han Jiang!"
Footsteps approached. Han Jiang arrived with Maya Bryth and Jade Orchard in tow.
Maya Bryth wore a beige camisole today, her long legs bare beneath denim shorts. Her eyes darted around before settling on Quill Jagger's flat stomach.
"This can't be..." Maya Bryth gasped.
There should have been a fatal wound there.
"Stop overreacting." Blair Nash waved her off. "Get her to the Seeress now."
Maya Bryth studied Blair Nash for a long moment before saying, "Chief Cabinet minister wants to see you."
"Later." He didn't look up. "After I repair the spiritual meridians."
Jade Orchard stepped forward silently, tucking the blankets around Quill Jagger with practiced ease. The girl had been delivering meals these past days, handling her as gently as fragile porcelain.
Quill Jagger suddenly grabbed Blair Nash's wrist.
"What?" He frowned.
"Thank you." Her voice was soft but clear.
Blair Nash blinked, then grinned. "Just remember to pay the bill."
As the stretcher lifted her, Quill Jagger took one last look at the man who had saved her life. Sunlight streamed through cracks in the cave ceiling, gilding him in gold.
For the first time, she truly felt how good it was to be alive.
