Chapter 153
"Try this tiramisu. The sweetness is just right." Sophia pushed the last two cake slices toward Ethan. "I saved them especially for you."
He frowned but took a bite.
"Good?" Her eyes sparkled with anticipation.
Against his better judgment, Ethan nodded. "Passable."
Sophia immediately shoved the second piece at him. "Take them both."
The black Maybach idled outside her apartment complex. Sophia checked her watch. "The nearby supermarket's closing soon. Let's go to the one on Riverside Drive."
Ethan had no desire to run errands after dessert, but her eager expression made him turn the wheel.
"Take a right up ahead—it's faster," Sophia suddenly pointed to a narrow side road.
Ethan glanced at the navigation screen. A DUI checkpoint flashed ahead. "We're detouring."
"Why? You haven't been drinking." She rolled down her window, letting the night breeze tangle her hair. "This route leads straight to the supermarket parking lot. Detouring will make us late."
His eyes narrowed. "What are you plotting, Sophia?"
"Me? Scheming?" She blinked with exaggerated innocence. "The store's really about to close."
Ethan studied her for three long seconds before turning onto the shortcut.
Police officers were packing up their breathalyzer equipment.
Sophia suddenly leaned out the window and shouted, "Officer! This man's driving drunk!"
Ethan slammed the brakes, grabbing her wrist. "Have you lost your mind?"
"He drank an entire bottle of red wine!" She wrenched free and kept yelling, "I begged him to call a driver, but he insisted on getting behind the wheel!"
An officer immediately blocked their path.
"Sophia." Ethan's voice could freeze hell. "You'll regret this."
She tilted her head, smiling. "That's for the police to decide."
A sharp knock rattled the window. The officer said sternly, "Step out of the vehicle, please."
Sophia hopped out and pointed dramatically at the driver's seat. "That's him! Completely wasted, swerving all over the road—it was terrifying!"
