Chapter 114
Sophia Lowell finally finished her work as city lights began twinkling outside her window.
She massaged her stiff neck, realizing she'd missed dinner. Her empty stomach growled in protest.
Her fingers brushed over her flat abdomen. "Hungry, little one? Mommy's sorry," she murmured.
The refrigerator stood empty when she opened it.
A glance at her watch confirmed the supermarket was still open.
She grabbed her coat and keys, rushing toward the door.
The moment she yanked it open, she nearly collided with a solid chest.
"Jesus!" She stumbled back.
Ethan Roscente barely avoided the swinging door, his expression stormy. "Sophia."
Recognition sparked instant irritation. "Are you insane? Lurking outside my door at this hour!"
She pressed a protective hand to her stomach, silently reassuring her baby.
Ethan's gaze zeroed in on the gesture. "You're pregnant?"
Her pulse jumped. "You wish! Maybe your entire family is!"
A vein throbbed at his temple.
Even her insults were self-destructive.
Noticing her purse, his eyes darkened. "Where are you going?"
She slammed the door without answering, striding toward the elevator.
Ethan seized her wrist, pinning her against the elevator wall. "I asked you a question."
"Are you human?" She glared up at him.
The air around him turned glacial. "Apparently I've been too lenient."
"Back off." She wrinkled her nose. "You reek of perfume."
He stepped closer instead. "Last chance. Where?"
"None of your damn business."
He leaned in until his breath warmed her lips. "Tell me or I'll kiss you."
"You—" Her ears burned. "Disgusting!"
"Just realizing that?" He arched a brow.
The elevator dinged at the ground floor.
"Grocery shopping!" she spat through clenched teeth.
Some tension left his shoulders, but his tone remained cutting. "Professor Orlando didn't feed you?"
She shook off his grip. "Stop barking."
His face turned murderous.
