Chapter 81
The kite soared effortlessly into the sky, drawing bright smiles from Isabella and Lily.
Julian watched Isabella's radiant expression, his gaze darkening slightly.
Noticing his stare, Isabella tilted her head. "Something wrong?"
"Nothing," he replied simply.
She didn't press further, leading Lily a little farther away. Julian kept his distance, honoring his promise not to intrude.
When they grew tired of flying the kite, Isabella and Lily moved to the lakeside to fish. They crouched by a vendor's small pond, studying the darting fish before attempting to catch them with tiny nets.
Soon, midday arrived.
Julian hadn't packed any food, having only planned a short outing. Seeing Lily's hunger, he suggested lunch at a nearby café.
After a relaxing morning, Isabella felt lighter and agreed without hesitation.
Over the meal, Isabella chatted animatedly with Lily.
Julian stayed silent, content to slide their favorite dishes closer whenever they reached for them.
Isabella, engrossed in conversation, didn't notice his subtle gestures.
A moment later, Julian's phone buzzed.
Glancing at the screen, he excused himself. "I need to take this."
Isabella nodded.
It was Oliver.
Stepping away, Julian answered. "What is it?"
"Where are you? Have you eaten? A friend just sent over fresh seafood. Alexander and the others are coming. Join us?"
Julian glanced at Isabella and Lily. "Already ate. Next time."
"Tonight, then. Yacht party. Alexander confirmed. Bring your niece—we haven't met her yet. Perfect chance for introductions."
Julian's voice remained firm. "She's shy. Crowds make her uncomfortable."
"Relax. Sophia will be there. They're the same age—they'll get along. Seven o'clock. Don't be late." Oliver hung up before Julian could refuse.
After lunch, Isabella and Lily chased butterflies and rode bicycles until exhaustion set in.
Lily eventually dozed off.
Isabella, equally worn out, decided to head home. She left quietly.
Julian watched her car disappear before departing himself.
When Lily woke and found Isabella gone, her face fell. "Where's Ms. Sinclair?"
"She went home," Julian said.
"Oh..." Disappointment laced her voice.
That evening at seven, Julian boarded the yacht as agreed.
Alexander and the others had already arrived. Oliver waved him over.
Spotting Lily, Oliver grinned. "This must be the famous Lily. Hello, I'm Oliver Westbrook, your uncle's friend."
The yacht buzzed with activity, making Lily shrink into herself.
Then Victoria arrived with Sophia in tow.
Julian tensed slightly at their appearance.
Hearing Lily was shy, Sophia extended a hand. "There's a kids' play area over there. Want to join me?"
Lily looked to Julian. Only after his encouraging nod did she take Sophia's hand.
Oliver smirked as they walked away. "First time playing babysitter? How's it feel?"
"It's fine."
Lily might be shy, but she was well-behaved—easy to manage.
Alexander handed Julian a glass of wine. "Drink?"
