Chapter 27

Isabella's heart lifted as Emily's fever finally broke. With her best friend recovering, she returned home with renewed purpose. The upcoming banquet loomed large in her mind - she needed the perfect dress.

The afternoon found her browsing through The Grandeur's exclusive collection. Staff members buzzed around one particular gown like bees to honey, barely noticing her arrival until she stood before them.

"May I help you, miss?"

"Just looking, thank you."

Though born into the prestigious Sinclair family, Isabella had attended few formal events. Alexander and Catherine had always excluded her from their social engagements. Evelyn, her mother, had long withdrawn from high society's glittering circles.

While not a fashion expert, years of listening to Emily's industry tales had sharpened Isabella's eye for design. The boutique's dazzling array overwhelmed her - she sought something understated yet elegant.

Then she saw it.

A lavender chiffon masterpiece floated before her, its delicate floral embroidery catching the light. The mannequin wore a necklace that made Isabella's breath catch - diamonds winking like captured stars.

Her fingers twitched toward the fabric.

"Please don't touch!" The manager grabbed her wrist with surprising force. "My apologies," he said, releasing her quickly. "This is a custom piece for a VIP client. One of a kind. The insurance alone..."

Isabella nodded, disappointment sharp in her throat. Even the boutique's million-dollar dresses paled beside this creation.

She settled on an ivory silk gown with subtle floral motifs. As the cashier wrapped her purchase, whispers reached her ears.

"Thirty million for the set - can you imagine? That's a penthouse worn as jewelry."

"One night only too. The rich really play by different rules."

Isabella's lips curved wryly. Even if available, that dress belonged to another world entirely.

Emily called as she arrived home. "Dinner tomorrow - my treat!" When she heard about the banquet, Emily descended upon Isabella's apartment with makeup brushes flying.

Under Emily's skilled hands, Isabella's natural elegance transformed into something breathtaking. When Nathaniel arrived that evening, his sharp intake of air spoke volumes.

"You're stunning. That dress was made for you."

"Thank you."

As the car pulled away, Nathaniel mentioned, "You're returning to the office tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Perfect timing. Victoria starts then - the algorithm prodigy I told you about. I'll introduce you."
