Chapter 59
The public backlash would drown Victoria if this got out.
Reginald's blatant favoritism toward his daughter couldn't be more obvious.
Nathaniel Graves despised dealing with Reginald in such settings, but the opportunity to connect with Alexander Whitmore was too valuable to pass up.
When Isabella excused herself to the restroom, Reginald seized the moment with Victoria and Beatrice in tow.
"Mr. Whitmore," Reginald extended his hand with practiced charm. "Reginald Kensington, father of both Isabella and Victoria. A pleasure."
Alexander shook his hand politely. "Mr. Kensington. Likewise."
Reginald gestured toward Victoria. "Isabella has always been... headstrong. There've been misunderstandings between the sisters. As their father, I've tried mediating, but Isabella refuses to listen—"
"Is that so?" Alexander feigned interest.
Reginald sighed dramatically before brightening. "Still, I'm relieved she's acquainted with someone of your caliber. Knowing she's joined your company puts my mind at ease. Do look after her."
The words dripped with paternal concern.
Had Reginald not deliberately waited for Isabella's absence...
Had Alexander not known about her past with Alexander...
He might have believed the performance.
Instead, he smiled. "You flatter me, Mr. Kensington. Isabella's talent speaks for itself. We're fortunate to have her at Graves Innovations."
The trio assumed this was mere politeness.
What could a girl like Isabella possibly offer a man like Alexander?
Menial tasks at best.
Reginald kept this thought to himself. Victoria remained silent while Beatrice smirked.
"Mr. Whitmore," Reginald pressed on, "you're aware of Victoria's credentials. She's eager to contribute to Graves Innovations—"
Though Frederick Aldridge had already promised Victoria mentorship, aligning with Graves Innovations' rising star never hurt.
Alexander turned to Victoria. "Your interest honors us, Ms. Kensington. With your skills, you'd be an asset. However, Isabella and I are—"
Victoria interrupted smoothly. "I understand completely, Mr. Whitmore. No pressure."
She no longer needed Graves Innovations. But burning bridges with Alexander? Unwise.
They'd likely study under the same mentor soon.
Better an ally than an enemy.
Alexander's demeanor today was noticeably warmer than at the gala.
Whether genuine or facade, time would tell.
"Your understanding is appreciated," Alexander replied.
From afar, their exchange appeared congenial.
When Isabella emerged and froze at the sight, Beatrice caught her reaction and smirked.
